Our Story
In the heart of Gugulethu, just 17.5 km from Cape Town's city centre, Gogo's Community Kitchen stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. Born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, our story is one of community strength in the face of adversity.

The township of Gugulethu, shaped by apartheid's violent spatial legacy, faces numerous challenges that impede community members’ dignity and welfare. Safe spaces are scarce, unemployment looms large, and social issues from hunger to gender-based violence cast long shadows over daily life.
As the world ground to a halt in early 2020, community member Pamela Silwana was working with Opportunities For Women (OFW), tirelessly helping the unemployed find work – a task that seemed increasingly futile as the prospect of lockdown loomed. The announcement of a three-week shutdown sent shockwaves through Gugulethu, a community already grappling with poverty, crime, and unemployment. For many, the prospect of being confined without access to daily income meant not just inconvenience, but potential starvation.
In these moments of despair, an unexpected lifeline emerged. Through Cape Town Together, an initiative bridging the city's stark socioeconomic divide, Gugulethu connected with the affluent Atlantic Seaboard area. This act of solidarity gave birth to the Gugulethu Community Action Network (CAN) and, ultimately, to Gogo's Community Kitchen.
What began as a lifeline of emergency food relief quickly blossomed into something far more profound. Today, Gogo's Community Kitchen is part of the beating heart of our community. We serve not just meals, but hope. Our kitchen has become a sanctuary where women and girls find safety, where children's minds are nourished through after-school programmes, where people facing isolation find solace in counseling, and where we plant seeds of awareness about our changing climate.
Despite facing funding challenges as the pandemic waned, we've adapted through innovative sustainability programmes. Gogo's Community Kitchen stands as a powerful symbol of what can be achieved when a community comes together in times of crisis. It continues to provide meals while also serving as a space for education, support, and community engagement. In the heart of Gugulethu, amidst the challenges, Gogo's Kitchen continues to serve up hope, one meal at a time.
